orcapod
With a speed demon at the helm, it didn't take long to reach the area where the resident Orca were feeding on salmon. We learned that there are two types of Orca: resident and transient. The resident Orca are very social and stay in their family pods in the same area all year. They live a long time. There is one resident female Orca who has been seen in the area for about 90 years. They are a matriarchal society that feed on fish, mostly salmon. The transient Orca, on the other hand, travel up and down the coast and feed on mammals. Also matriarchal, they live in smaller groups. They are the Orca that gave these dolphins the "killer whale" reputation. They are fearsome.
We were afraid to take our digital camera on the boat, so we bought a disposable waterproof camera with a poor lense and no zoom. Sorry that the tall dorsal fins in this pod are hard to make out!
